The Sir Michael Howard Prize was launched in March 2022 and is awarded to the author of the best article in any one volume of the British Journal for Military History. The Winner receives a cash award (currently £250), a Trophy and a Certificate. A Certificate is awarded to the Runner-up.  The prizes are funded by the Britihs Commission for Military History.

All articles published in the journal will automatically be eligible for winning the prize which is awarded for each calendar year.  A panel comprised of the two journal co-editors and two representatives of the British Commission for Military History considers all articles early in the year after publication, with the prizes awarded at the BCMH AGM in March.
